Stephen Mader – President/Certified Medical Illustrator

Stephen Mader is a Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) and is the President of Artery Studios. As well as undergraduate degrees in biology (BSc) and medical illustration (BScAAM), he holds a Master of Science in Biomedical Communications (MScBMC) from the Institute of Medical Science, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. His graduate work examined personal injury lawyers’ perceptions of effective visual communication tools, with his research findings published in the Journal of Biocommunication (2005). Stephen has contributed illustrations to numerous publications, including Grant’s Atlas of Anatomy (9th edition), The Oatley-McLeish Guide to Anatomy and Impairment as well as their guide to Demonstrative Advocacy.

Stephen leads Artery Studios in visual problem-solving and creative direction, testifies as a qualified expert in medical illustration, and presents and writes extensively on medical-legal visualization.

He has served on the board as well as numerous committees of the Association of Medical Illustrators. His recreational activities include fitness, travel, painting, real estate, collecting art, reading, appreciating cultural activities and heading to the cottage for R&R.

Philip Zabel – Manager of Operations
B.Sc., MBA, MD

As Manager of Operations, Philip leads the operations team and is involved in quality control. He ensures accuracy of our visuals, manages business initiatives, and is involved with the strategic development of the company.

Philip joined Artery Studios in 2019 and brings with him experience from various sectors across North America including Energy, Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Technology & Innovation. He holds a bachelor’s in Biochemistry (BSc) with a minor in Psychology, a Master of Business Administration (MBA), and a Doctor of Medicine (MD). During his medical education, Philip gained clinical experience in numerous medical facilities across North America including in Miami, Ottawa, Chicago and St. John’s. Philip serves in the capacity of medical expert to the studio to ensure quality and accuracy of our work.

Michelle Young – Manager of Production

Michelle earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Concordia University in Montreal. She completed her undergraduate research project in cardiovascular health, and her thesis compared the role of genetics versus behavioural and environmental factors in hypertension.

Prior to joining the Artery Studios team, Michelle spent nine years working in the pharmaceutical research industry. Her project management and client service experience, as well as her training in business communications, are pivotal to her role as our clients’ primary point of contact. She is committed to ensuring smooth and timely production of visuals by maintaining regular communication and closely monitoring the studio’s internal workflow.

In her spare time, Michelle enjoys creative writing, taking beach vacations, and pounding it out on a punching bag in boxing class.

Sid Sur – Business Development Representative
BComm, Dipl Marketing (Hon)

Sid completed a Bachelor of Commerce (marketing specialization) from York University, as well as a Diploma in Marketing from Humber College. His role at Artery Studios includes reaching out to new clients to discuss how Artery’s visualizations can solve their communication challenges. His love for helping clients overcome obstacles started in his late teens when he discovered that his interpersonal skills, problem-solving aptitude, and desire to provide comprehensive solutions to clients, were all maximized in a business development role.

In his downtime, Sid enjoys running, staying active, reading, and traveling.

Dino Pulerà – Team Lead/Senior Medical Illustrator

Dino earned his Master of Science in Biomedical Communications from the University of Toronto in 1996. After graduation, he worked as a medical and scientific illustrator and animator producing visuals predominately for undergraduate textbook publications. Dino joined Artery Studios in 2003 to provide art direction and medical illustration leadership. His expertise lies in problem-solving, integration of technology into the workflow, and innovating visual solutions for the studio – including in the 3D arena.

His current publishing projects include creating illustrations of North American and Asian meat-eating dinosaurs and working on improving and revising his co-authored book The Dissection of Vertebrates.

Jennifer Bosy – Medical Illustrator


Jennifer has always enjoyed illustrating scientific subject matter. Following the completion of her Master of Science in botany, she developed an interest in human anatomy and pursued her Master of Science in Biomedical Communications (MScBMC), conducting research on illustration communication techniques.

As Artery Studios’ first professional production employee, Jennifer has been involved in the company’s growth and evolution. She continues to find Artery Studios’ mandate of helping others through visuals to be highly rewarding – fulfilling her love of both art and science.

Ken VanderStoep – Senior Medical Animator
BSc (Hon), MScBMC


As Artery Studios’ senior-most animator, Ken plays a key role in the production of motion media. While having his hand in a wide range of projects, from illustration to interactive programming, his primary focus is 3D modeling, compositing and animation.

Ken holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology (BSc), a post-graduate Certificate in Computer Animation from Sheridan College, and a Master of Science in Biomedical Communications (MScBMC) from the University of Toronto. His graduate research involved using 3D animation techniques to assist in HIV-related virology education.

Working with the latest 3D animation technology, Ken has produced a number of award-winning visuals.

Sherry Lai – Senior Medical Illustrator


Sherry holds a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science and a Master of Science in Biomedical Communications from the University of Toronto with a specialization in new media. Her master’s research project involved exploring animation as an effective tool for showing aortic valve pathology. Sherry has contributed illustrations to Spine and Techniques in Ophthalmology.

An accomplished illustrator, Sherry maintains a particular focus on depicting pathology, surgical concepts and the human form. Other than medical illustration, Sherry’s passion in life is to travel the world and be inspired by it.

Kimberly Chin – Senior Medical Illustrator
BSc (Hon), MScBMC


Prior to graduating from the Master of Science in Biomedical Communications program at the University of Toronto in 2008, Kimberly earned a degree in biology with a minor in art history from McMaster University. She has also completed the art fundamentals program from Sheridan College.

Her master’s thesis was a comparative study examining the effectiveness of various interactive presentations on the comprehension of factual evidence in a complex medical malpractice case.

Aside from her passion for art and science, Kimberly enjoys traveling, archery, yoga, piano and baking sweet treats for the studio.

Laurie Contois – Administrative Associate


As Administrative Associate, Laurie is involved in all aspects of studio administration. Laurie obtained her Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of Guelph, specializing in human nutrition and physiology. Laurie has experience in many administrative areas, including reception, payroll/accounting and customer service. Laurie is intrinsic to the studio with her research, report writing and quality-control abilities.

Amanda Kellam – Marketing/Admin Associate


Amanda holds a Bachelor of Design in Illustration from OCAD University as well as a Communications Certificate from George Brown College. As Marketing/Admin Associate, Amanda implements marketing and communication initiatives, coordinates conference and presentation logistics, and provides administrative and studio support. Amanda brings experience in medical office management and a passion for design to her role.

Peter Caldwell – Consultant – Business Strategy
MBA, Dr(hc)

Peter Caldwell holds an MBA from the Ivey Business School. Peter was Director & CEO of the Ontario Arts Council for eight years and previously was VP Finance & Administration at OCAD University, which awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in 2011. He is currently active as a member of the Lakehead University Board of Governors, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, and the Orillia & Lake Country Physicians Recruitment, with previous involvement as a board member with Canadian Public Arts Funders, Toronto Artscape, Laidlaw Foundation, the Design Exchange and numerous other organizations.

Peter offers advisory services to Artery Studios, including for strategic planning, sales and marketing.
